The is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and innovative financial leader to play a critical role in serving one of the nation’s leading public institutions as it embarks on an ambitious strategic plan The 2030 Plan and continues significant financial transformation marked by an evolving activity-based budgetary model and the deployment of new financial systems. As the University continues to advance its mission, the Executive Director will play a pivotal role in supporting these overarching goals by developing and deploying a deeply analytical framework for effective financial resources management, fully leveraging technology to efficiently facilitate resource allocation and multi-year financial planning, and participating in the leadership and execution of the University’s budgeting and planning efforts.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Financial Strategy, the Executive Director of Financial Planning and Analysis will serve as a key member of the finance team partnering with a broad set of internal and external stakeholders to provide objective, accurate, and timely information, analyses, and decision-support tools while ensuring a high degree of transparency and collaboration. The Executive Director will direct the annual budget development process; manage the application of the University Financial Model (UFM) budget model and other cost recoveries; evaluate and provide innovative solutions to ongoing budget and planning needs; inform the strategic planning process, and monitor performance against established budgets by delivering timely and accurate reports and analytics. Central to this role is the development and support of integrated long-range financial plans. As UVA continues its strategic financial transformation, the Executive Director will play a key role in developing institution budget guidelines, streamlining processes, modernizing systems, and ensuring compliance by building and nurturing a high-performing team that strives for operational excellence.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of at least ten years of experience in financial management. While a Bachelor’s degree is a minimum requirement, an advanced degree in finance, business, or related field is preferred. The successful candidate must possess broad technical expertise and applicable management experience, including exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills coupled with a collegial and transparent style that engenders trust and fosters collaboration. Relevant budget and planning experience in a large, diverse, and decentralized organization, ideally in higher education, is required. Direct experience with responsibility center management (RCM) is strongly preferred. Given the visibility associated with this role, candidates must have experience leading large scale change and efficiency efforts as well as possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, coupled with the ability to interact collaboratively at all levels of the organization.
